Romance in Alternate Worlds

July 2024 reads...

8/1/2024

Below are the books that I read in July and my thoughts on each one.

I'm trying to do the Fold Reading Challenge to diversify my reading. In July, I was to read a book translated by an independent Canadian press. I failed. But I did read a diverse collection of books. In August, I'm to read a novel or book of poetry by a Caribbean author. And I've already started reading a book for that.

MISSING WHITE WOMAN by Kellye Garrett

In the beginning of this story, you might think it's a romance. Until it's not. And that's the point where the wild ride begins. Breanna stumbles upon an unalived body in the Airbnb she's staying at, with her boyfriend missing, and the entire internet looking at her. She must deal with her distrust of the police after serving time for a crime she didn't commit, all the assumptions online influencers make about the case, along with being doxxed by their followers, her own family issues, and a former best friend whom she doesn't know if she can trust. Missing White Woman is a fabulous book, and I enjoyed every page of it!

PRETTY FURIOUS by E. K. Johnston
Reading Pretty Furious didn't feel like reading a fiction book. It felt like I was reading (or being told) the stories of my friends, or maybe my kid's friends because of the time period, from high school. Why? Because I know this area. I've driven through "Eganston" many times on the way to Goderich, been to the "Londsett" Conservation area, and even driven on some of those side roads. And I cheered these girls on the entire time, as they quietly got back at people for injustices that many of us females are told to keep quiet about, and not make a big deal about. I loved how we got the viewpoint of all five friends and got to know them and their families in such a short period of time! I definitely will read more from E.K. Johnston!

DELIVERED TO MY TIGERS by Mazzy J. March
This was a fun story about deception, forgiveness, and finding true love unexpectedly through an app. Plus, I do particularly love sexy tigers shifters!
Picture
MIDWIFE TO DESTINY by Nana Prah
This is a sweet romance (with Christianity references) about a doctor and nurse who first meet in South Africa while the nurse is on holidays there and needs to be treated for her sprain. The doctor shows her around, and they quickly fall in love. Though nothing comes of it when Ora returns home, they are reunited again three years later while working in Ghana. Jason is sure Ora is the one for him, but Ora must work through her fear of commitment in order for the two of them to find a happy ending together.

BLURB:

Why would I ever return to Ma’an?

My moema and I escaped from the planet star cycles ago, to avoid her being forced to remarry after my poepa’s passing. I grew up well far away from there, not worrying about being betrothed to some government official just to bear his children. And now I work for the Universal Space Racer Association, traveling all over the quadrants to decide whether new teams meet the qualifications to join.

I never expected to be on a shuttle, heading back to Ma’an. The new chairman of Ma’an and the USRA assured me I’ll be allowed to leave at the end of my evaluation of the planet, but I have my doubts. I can’t even get out of the assignment. Trust me, I’ve tried.

At least I’ll be able to see more of Deyal, my only family member still alive. Plus, my best friend is convinced the three childhood friends I left behind are my fated mates, two of which are on the team, and the other is my shagard. I’m not ready to commit to one person, let alone three. And polyamorous relationships were banned on the planet long before my birth. But the three of them have grown from the cute boys I remember into sexy strangers.

It’s too bad I have a rule to never sleep with the racers I’m inspecting.

4 United is the first book in Jessica E. Subject’s sweet and spicy Kaddim Brothers spinoff series, Romance Tales from the Quadrants. 4 United features Eta, who escaped Ma’an with her moema just as her hair was starting to turn pink, her three childhood friends who grew up to be very sexy men, an unexpected assignment, fated mates, true love, and other family and friends getting involved to make sure the four of them get their happy ever after. If you like MMMF relationships, second chances at love, friends to lovers, and fated mates, read 4 United today.

Enjoy an excerpt...

As I reached the steps, I glanced out across the tarmac. In the distance, I could see the shed my l’sida used for her delivery service, her competitor’s shed right beside hers. The same company Sakuunu used to work for before training to become a space racer. Deyal had been mad he hadn’t come to work for her poepa the way Nunki had, but when she’d lost only one pilot to the idea of becoming a space racer, she gloated that her competition had lost three.

At the bottom of the steps, several men rushed to meet those in front of me, quickly whisking them off in hovercars before I’d reached the ground.

The guy I’d seen in the photo waited for me. The one assigned to be my shagard. In the picture, I hadn’t seen any resemblance to the boy I once knew. But in person, when he smiled, I recognized him instantly. His deep dimples, almost like pockets, still appeared when he smiled, though his facial scruff shadowed them. And after so many star cycles, he still hadn’t lost his look of wide-eyed wonder. “Qamar, it’s so good to see you again.”

His grin widened as he opened his arms to me. “You, too, Eta. I can’t believe you’re here.”

I stepped into his embrace, surprised by the wave of grief that swept over me, at how much I wished I had been there to see him grow up. Especially with how fine of a grown man he had become. Suddenly, my fantasy flashed through my mind again, and I quickly stepped away from him. I couldn’t think of Qamar as anything other than the man assigned to keep me safe while traveling between my workplace and accommodations. I would be seeing him all the time. I couldn’t have fantasies about him. Not with him as part of my assignment. And especially not when he lived on Ma’an, a place I never planned to return to once I finished. Stars, I wished Rumi hadn’t mentioned anything about the three of them possibly being my fated mates.

“So, is it just you here to meet me?” I needed to learn more about what I would be doing before my mind went wild with other ideas. But I hadn’t meant to wash away Qamar’s smile.

“Sorry to disappoint you, but it’s only me.”

I gripped his bicep, all hard muscle though he didn’t flex. Stars, how could I not lust over him? “Oh, you’re not a disappointment. Not in the least. I haven’t received an itinerary though, so I’m not sure when I’m supposed to meet Chairman Lo’an. And the team.”

“Oh.” His cheeks reddened under his scruff. Absolutely adorable. Stars, aside from his appearance, he hadn’t changed much. “I’m supposed to take you to meet Kygan, the team coordinator, tomorrow morning. He’ll accompany you to your meeting with Chairman Lo’an after that. Until then, I’m to take you to your accommodations and make sure you have everything you need.”
