February 2024 reads...

Below are the books that I read in February and my review for each. I'm trying to do the Fold Reading Challenge to diversify my reading. In January, I read a book by a Palestinian author, and in February, I read a book that has been challenged in Canadian schools. For March, I will read a young adult mystery by a racialized author.

All Systems Red by Martha Wells

This story had a great premise and I was really excited to read it. It was slow to start and it felt like a lot of the action happened off the page, like we only caught glimpses of the story occurring in the author's mind. It also seemed like the character development only started at the end of the story. Maybe that was meant to encourage readers to read the next in the series, but I'm not sure if I will. Others may enjoy this story, but it fell short for me.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

This book shouldn't be banned, but instead be required reading. It's important to understand how others live, know their circumstances and how that affects their choices in life. It's also important to understand that the systems in place don't protect or effect everyone to the same degree. Besides the amazing way Angie Thomas shares through Starr's experiences what it is like to grow up being black in America, she also shares an important life lesson. We need to use our voice to stand up for what is right. And though change doesn't happen overnight, creating awareness is the first step. And the more voices that come together, the stronger the voices become. This book goes above and beyond all the hype and awards it has received, and I am glad Ms. Thomas decided to write it and share it with the world.
