September 2026 Reads...

Below are the books I read in September along with my thoughts on each. I'm not doing any formal reading challenges this year, but I am continuing to read diversely. For the rest of the year, I'm reading the books that I had pre-ordered for the year, as well as other new releases that I bought throughout the year. Looking at my list, there are many books by Canadian authors. I'm sure there will be others thrown in as well as I try to tackle my always growing book collection that is both digital and physical. As for audiobooks, I listen to whatever is available from my wish list on Libby through my local library.

Fourteen Days (audiobook) by Various Authors & Narrated by Shayna Small

This is an interesting story of stories. It is set in New York over fourteen days during lockdown from the recent pandemic. Told from the viewpoint of the superintendent of a rundown apartment building who is desperate to contact her father at a retirement home, we hear stories (both true and fiction), as well as confessions from the tenants in the building as they meet on the roof of the building every night to cheer on the healthcare workers and socialize at a safe distance apart. When new tenants appear, confusion arises, but no one questions it too much. Not when everything is locked down and safe places are difficult to find. It's not until the last chapter when the twist slowly revealed over the entire book is revealed.

This Fallen Prey by Kelley Armstrong

I really love Kelley Armstrong's books and especially this series. I started out listening to them in audio, but I was on a waiting list for this book with my library, so I got the book itself. I couldn't wait. This Fallen Prey is so much more intense and faster-paced than the first two. It starts with a supposed serial killer then adds in settlers, hostiles, snippers, and more unexpected visitors. No one is safe in Rockton or out in the forest, not even Casey's puppy, Storm. Casey realizes she cannot trust anyone except Eric. And their love and protection for each other puts them in even more danger. While the story comes to a conclusion of sorts, there are many issues that are unresolved and will likely come into play in future books in the series.

Watcher in the Woods (audiobook) by Kelley Armstrong & Narrated by Thérèse Plummer

This book, as with the entire series, left me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire story. Watcher in the Woods starts almost directly after This Fallen Prey. So, while Casey and Dalton are still dealing with the repercussions of the serial killer they had in their town, they have a new problem when the US Marshall, who's come to take one of their residents, turns up dead. They must also deal with their temporary doctor, Kenny's recovery, and some residents who don't make it easy to live in Rockton. I read the previous book instead of listening to the audiobook, and I found I missed Thérèse Plummer as the voice of Casey Duncan, so it was good to have that aspect of the story back. I am so hooked on this series, and I learned their is a spinoff series after (which I already own some of), so I must keep going. That's not a hardship since this series is so good!

Everything Comes Back to You by Jackie Khalilieh

In this coming-of-age story, Lennon learns a lot about friends, family, love, and especially herself. She grew up constantly trying to please her parents and make them proud. But when she begins to make decisions for herself, she wonders how much longer she can continue as the "good" girl. It is also the story of Lennon learning what love is and how to get what she wants rather than what others expect from her. Lennon also deals with how her culture, religion, and being autistic affects her thoughts and actions. Everything Comes Back to You is an emotional story full of ups and downs. It speaks of some of the same issues as Jackie Khalilieh's previous books while also tackling new and deeper ones. While I cannot relate to Lennon in many ways, I did find the author's portrayal of her autism to be very relatable. As always, I'm looking forward to Jackie's next book!

Hemlock Island (audiobook) by Kelley Armstrong & Narrated by Angela Dawe

"Be careful what you wish for." That is the underlying premise of this horror story that involves a secluded island on Lake Superior. Laney was given a house on a private island as a wedding gift from her ex husband. But with rising costs and being the guardian of her niece after her sister's passing, she can't afford the island herself and must rent it out throughout the year for the extra income. But something is scaring the renters away, and after one such incident, she heads to Hemlock Island with her niece to figure out what is going on. She doesn't expect her ex, his sister who is her former friend, another former friend, and her brother (whom she has a mysterious history with) to show up and insist on heading to the island with them. The discoveries become creepier and creepier as day turns into night, until bodies are found that aren't quite dead. They are all trying to figure out what is going on while sorting out their messy pasts with each other. This is an intense horror story, perfect for this time of year, with so many layers. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the narration was great, too!

Once Upon a Library Wish, the third book in my City Wishes & Enchanted Dreams series releases on October 13th, and I thought I would share the official excerpt with you. This scene is when Max and Atlas officially meet for the first time. Enjoy!

As I pulled my shirt over my head, I hurried toward the outer-worlder. “Atlas.”

He paused and turned around. The sunshine radiated around him, making the young man look like he glowed. His eyes were wide and he gulped. “Max? You’re Max, the dragon shifter?”

“Yes.” I leaned against the wall of my cave, trying to look relaxed and put him at ease, even as my own heart raced. “Falco said you wanted to meet a dragon.”

“Yeah, um…” Clasping his hands in front of himself, he glanced down at them. “I read a book about a dragon shifter and thought it would be nice to meet one.”

I chuckled, finding his shyness quite adorable. His wavy hair was messier than the day before but helped to highlight the golden flecks of color in his eyes. Slightly shorter than me, he had lean muscles and soft lips. He was perfect, everything I’d ever imagined in a mate. And most importantly, he didn’t look at me like I was some disgusting creature that should be banished or destroyed.

“I’m sorry I was asleep when you arrived.” I ran my hand through my hair, not knowing what else to do with my hands. Not when I so badly wanted to touch him, hold him, ensure this wasn’t another dream. “I hope my dragon form didn’t frighten you.”

With a quick shake of his head, he took a step toward me and held out his hand before dropping it to his side. “Does it hurt? When you shift?”

“Not exactly.” I pushed off the wall and dug my toes into the ground. “More uncomfortable than anything until I complete the transformation. Especially when I go to this form since its much smaller than my natural state.”

“Huh.” He furrowed his brows. “So, you and all the shifters here are natural in your animal form. That’s so different from any shifter romance book I’ve ever read.”

ONCE UPON A LIBRARY WISH
City Wishes & Enchanted Dreams #3
by Jessica E. Subject

The cover of Once Upon a Library Wish by Jessica E. Subject shows a light-brown haired, light-skinned, bare-chested man on the left. Beside him is a dark-haired, light-skinned, bare-chested man. In front of them is an open, magical book. They are standing in a cave, and in the cave’s opening, a full moon is visible with a dragon flying in front of it. Around all of them are blue wisps with white orbs of light.
I don’t think this wish was meant for me… but that didn’t stop me from making one.

I need a new job. Due to budget cuts by the township, today is my last day working at the library. And I dread spending any time at the home I half own ever since my mom’s latest parasite of a boyfriend moved in.

As I’m shelving a paranormal romance novel, a white business card drops out of it. I pocket it for later, expecting it to be some kind of bookmark promoting the author.

At the end of the day, I reach into my pocket for the key to my bike lock when the card falls out. Instead of the author’s website or a QR code to scan, it tells me to make a wish. Why not? I would love to meet a hot dragon shifter like the one on the cover of the book the card came from. It wasn’t as if I was going to have any luck finding love in my small town.

That’s when everything changes.

Instead of biking home, I am standing on the edge of a field, watching a minotaur come charging toward me. He promises to introduce me to a dragon, but not before I agree to stay in their world. It seems like a dream, or perhaps a nightmare, but what if I finally found everything I’ve ever longed for?

Once Upon a Library Wish is the third story in the City Wishes & Enchanted Dreams series by USA Today bestselling author Jessica E. Subject. Once Upon a Library Wish is a MM MPreg shifter isekai fantasy romance that features a man looking for a place to belong, a reluctant alpha dragon shifter who longs for a mate and a family, the wizard who unknowingly brings them together, and many other new and old fantastical creatures from the Enchanted Forest. If you like fated mates, true love, males having babies, baby dragon shifters, and a guaranteed happy ever after, read Once Upon a Library Wish. While each book in the City Wishes & Enchanted Dreams series is set in the same world, they can be read as standalones.

July 2026 reads...

8/3/2026

Below are the books I read in July along with my thoughts on them. I'm not doing any formal reading challenges this year, but I am continuing to read diversely. In July I read books by Canadian authors. I did read as many as I'd planned to, as I was busy working on finishing a story. That's why I only managed one physical book and two audiobooks. I listen to the audiobooks when I walk my dog or when I'm doing chores around the house.
In August, I'm reading Indigenous authors. In September, it will be time to read the books that I had pre-ordered for the year, as they will all be out by September 1st.

CITY OF THE LOST by Kelley Armstrong & narrated by Thérèse Plummer

I really enjoy Kelley Armstrong's YA books, but I also enjoy her thrillers. This was such an intense read from start to finish and Thérèse Plummer was amazing as a narrated.

Casey Duncan went against her family of doctors to become a detective, and she has plenty of secrets and people to hide away from. But she agrees to leave the life she knows behind solely to get her best friend, Diana, away from her abusive and controlling ex. After a series of interviews and cash payments, the two of them head to Rockton, a town up in the Yukon that is not discoverable except by those who run it. Casey arrives after Diana and is immediately thrown into a murder case. The only problem is, most of the people in the town are up there under false names, hiding from what they've done, or from those who want to hurt them, making the town full of victims and criminals. Casey must work with Eric Dalton, the town sheriff, as well as Will, the deputy, to solve the case as well as the new ones that keep happening. She also must confront her own secrets, her toxic friendship, and her growing feelings for the uncultured sheriff. As her investigation unravels, she finds her own life at risk while so many twists and turns keep happening.  This was one of my favourite reads this year, and I can't wait to listen to the next in the series!

AETHERBOUND by E. K. Johnston

Pendt Harland grows up on her family's ship, getting only the minimum amount of food needed to keep her alive. She doesn't have the abilities her family desires, so they have her work in the kitchens until she is old enough to be sold off to another ship or a space station. A week before her 18th birthday, she escapes from the Harland onto Brannick Station. There she meets the young heirs of the station who show her that her undesirable mutation is something much more powerful and useful.

This story is charming and sweet with a satisfying ending that left me curious about the next book.

A DARKNESS ABSOLUTE by Kelley Armstrong & narrated by Thérèse Plummer

A Darkness Absolute is another thrilling story by Kelley Armstrong that is set in the city of Rockton. This time, Casey and Will come across a woman trapped in a hole when they are forced to take shelter in a cave during a snowstorm. The woman has been missing for over a year, and her discovery leads to the discovery of the remains of other missing women. Finding out who took them becomes difficult when Casey and Eric must consider suspects from Rockton, nearby settlements, and even hostiles. It takes a lot of digging, but eventually they find the abductor/killer. Or think they do...

I really do love this series by Kelley Armstrong and I think Thérèse Plummer is an amazing narrator. But, as a Canadian, I was thrown off by the pronunciation of toque. It should have the "ew" sound after the t, and not be pronounced as toke. That is something quite different in Canada.
